Privacy Policy for Color Picker
Last updated: 30 October 2026
Color Picker: Camera & Paint identifies colours with your camera or from photos, lets you save palettes, check contrast and export colours, try paint colours on photos of your walls ("Paint it") and find similar paint shades. It is free with a small banner ad, or you can buy Color Picker Pro. There is no account and no sign-in.
Camera and photos
- Camera (optional): the live picker analyses camera frames on your phone to read the colour under the target. Frames are never saved, recorded or sent anywhere.
- Photos: you choose a picture with the system photo picker, take one with the camera, or share one to the app. The app reads and paints its pixels on your phone; it never gets access to your whole gallery.
- Paint it โ Precise mode (optional, Pro, off by default): only when you turn it on, the photo you are painting (reduced to at most 1024 pixels) and the points you tap are sent over an encrypted connection to our server (Google Cloud Functions, project hosted by Google Firebase), which asks Meta's SAM image-segmentation model (Meta Model API) to outline the area. The photo is processed only to answer that request and is not stored by us; we log only technical data such as image size and processing time. See Meta's privacy policy. To use it the app signs in anonymously to Firebase (a random ID, no personal details), which is also used to check your Pro status with RevenueCat and to apply a daily limit.
- AI colour advisor (optional): only when you ask for advice, the room photo you choose (reduced to at most 1024 pixels), the room type and the feel you picked, and the app language are sent over an encrypted connection to our server (Google Cloud Functions), which passes them to Google's Gemini model through OpenRouter, with data collection for training turned off. The photo is processed only to answer that request and is not stored by us; we log only technical data such as image size, processing time and cost. See OpenRouter's privacy policy and Google's privacy policy. It uses the same anonymous Firebase sign-in, to apply a daily limit (2 a day free, 20 with Pro).
- Saved paintings go to your photo library only when you tap Save (on iPhone the app asks for "add photos" access only).
- Your saved colours, palettes, history and settings are stored only on your phone. They are deleted when you clear them in the app, clear the app's storage, or uninstall the app.
- Files you export (JSON, CSS, PNG, ASE, GPL, Tailwind) are created on your phone and shared only where you choose in the share sheet.
Analytics and crash reports
- We use Google Firebase Analytics to count anonymous app usage (for example which screens are opened and that a palette was exported) and Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash reports. These include a random app-instance ID, device model, OS version and app version. They never include colours, photos or anything you type. Analytics does not use your advertising ID.
- See Firebase privacy and security.
Notifications
- If you allow notifications, the app may send colour tips, news about new features and offers through Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google). For this your phone gets a random notification token, and the app subscribes it to a few general groups: all users, your app language, and free or Pro. No name, email, colours or photos are used.
- The app asks for permission only after you have used it, and you can turn notifications off at any time in Settings โ Notifications or in your phone's settings.
Ads (free version)
- The free version may show a small banner from Google AdMob on some screens (never on the camera). Google may collect your device's advertising ID, IP address and app usage to show and measure ads. See how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
- Where the law requires it (for example in the EU and UK), the app asks for your consent before personalised ads. On iPhone, Apple's "Allow tracking" prompt decides whether ads may be personalised; if you decline, ads are not personalised. You can change your choice in Settings โ Ad privacy choices.
- Color Picker Pro removes all ads.
Color Picker Pro (purchases)
- Payments are handled by Google Play or Apple; we never see your card details.
- We use RevenueCat to check whether you have Pro. RevenueCat receives your purchase details (product, dates, store receipt) with a random app user ID. See the RevenueCat privacy policy.
- Subscriptions are managed and cancelled in your Google Play or App Store account.
Permissions
- Camera: for the live colour picker (processed on the phone) and to take a photo to paint.
- Photos (add only): to save painted photos when you tap Save. On Android 9 and older this is the storage permission.
- Internet: for ads, purchases, analytics and crash reports. Colour picking, names, palettes and tools work offline.
- Notifications (if you allow them): tips, new features and offers; see Notifications above.
- No location, contacts or microphone permission is requested.
Your data and deleting it
All your colour data lives only on your phone; uninstalling the app deletes it. To have your anonymous ID and related data deleted, see Delete your Color Picker data. To ask about or delete analytics data associated with your app instance, email gautamk175@gmail.com.
Sharing
We don't sell your data. The only services involved are Google Firebase (analytics, crash reports, notifications, anonymous sign-in and the precise-mode and colour-advisor server), Google AdMob (ads in the free version), RevenueCat (purchases) Meta's Model API (precise mode only, when you turn it on) and OpenRouter with Google Gemini (the AI colour advisor, only when you ask for advice), as described above.
Children
Color Picker is a general-audience tool and is not directed at children under 13. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Colour data
Colour names come from openly licensed lists (meodai/color-names, MIT; CSS named colours; the Material Design palette, Apache 2.0; the xkcd colour survey, CC0). Colours read from a camera depend on lighting and are approximate. Paint shade lists come from PaintDB (paintdb.com, CC BY 4.0) and RAL-JSON (MIT); matches and painted previews are approximate, so always check a physical paint sample. Color Picker is not affiliated with any paint brand.
Changes
If this policy changes, we update this page and the date above.
